Seven 7”s With Joel
Women’s Month Edition
I dug through my personal collection (NFS) and pulled 7 of my favorite women centric 7”s. Please don’t hesitate to tell me yours as well 👇

The Muffs “Guilty”
Admitted Kim Shattuck superfan, but this eluded me until just recently as it was released on an Australian label (not many floating around the States). If you don’t know The Muffs, change that immediately. This is their first 7”, and I think objectively most will say their first two records are some of their best work.
Veruca Salt “Number One Blind”
“Number One Blind” is an underrated track on American Thighs, but the B side is the reason to grab this. It’s a cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Bodies,” and I love that it probably pissed off every edgy punk because it’s a slowed down indie rock version of it. Pretty sure the only place that cover is available is on this 7”.
Pylon “Cool Dub”
I’m not going to pretend to love Pylon, but I do think it’s essential listening, as this 7” is clearly a “they walked so others could run” situation. Lots of experimentation, lots of genre bending. Not incredibly palatable, but certainly interesting.
Liz Phair “Carnivore”
Love everything Liz did in the 90s. This is probably one of my favorite songs from her. Released in between Exile in Guyville and Whip Smart, a standalone single that later came out on a CD compilation.
Spitboy “Spitboy”
I first came to Spitboy by way of Lookout Records (which this 7” was released on). You start with Green Day and Operation Ivy, then work your way down a killer roster of awesome bands. Then sprinkle in seeing a Spitboy back patch on a cool older punk and my intrigue peaked. Adrienne has one of the best screams in punk rock history, topped with killer lyrics. Their whole catalog is golden, and if you’re unfamiliar, start anywhere and you’re good.
Babes In Toyland “Bruise Violet”
The undisputed foremothers of the kinderwhore style. Sadly a band overshadowed by Hole playing similar styles (Courtney Love played bass in BIT in the late 80s). In my opinion, Babes In Toyland are a demonstrably better band. Kat Bjelland’s vocals are epic, and the whole album Fontanelle is a total ripper.
Tsunami Bomb “Still Standing”
Alternate version (raw) of one of their best tracks, “El Diablo.” Also on the B side is a live version of my favorite song from them, “Lemonade.” One of those bands for me where I’m not sure what you call them. Amorphous punk, pop punk, hardcore punk, but all in all, fun.
Baby Gopal “Boys Against Girls”
Bought initially as a novelty, but I will admit I’ve grown to kind of like this 7”. All the imagery of this band plus the Krishna lyrics leaves you confused if you don’t know about the Krishna link in hardcore, and that Ray Cappo (Youth Of Today, Shelter) produced it.
